What is the Difference between Septoplasty and Rhinoplasty?

Dr. Suzanne Cleland-Zamudio is a plastic surgeon based in Portland, Oregon. Board-certified in otolaryngology as well as in facial plastic surgery, Dr.Suzanne Cleland-Zamudio has experience performing both rhinoplasty and septoplasty.

Rhinoplasty, often called a nose job, is a facial plastic surgery that corrects flaws with the nose. This may be done for aesthetic reasons, such as correcting a drooped tip, or to fix a crooked nose following a fracture. With a rhinoplasty, the doctor may trim cartilage to give the nose a slimmer form or shave off bone to reduce the size of a hump.

Septoplasty is also a surgical nose procedure, but it is performed solely to correct a deviated septum. The septum is the wall between nasal passages. When it is crooked, it can lead to breathing issues. During this procedure, the doctor cuts areas of the septum’s cartilage and/or bone and makes sure the septum is even.
