Open versus Closed Rhinoplasty

Dr. Suzanne Cleland-Zamudio is board certified in facial plastic surgery and otolaryngology. An experienced surgeon, Dr. Suzanne Cleland-Zamudio has performed both open and closed rhinoplasties.

A rhinoplasty is a major surgery, and patients need to be well informed of the risks and the different procedures used. A rhinoplasty can be performed via an open or a closed procedure. Doctors have their preferred methods, and patients should discuss which option is best for their needs.

An open rhinoplasty involves an incision made along the bottom of the nose, between the nostrils. This section is also known as the columella. The skin is then lifted and the plastic surgeon is able to access the cartilage and nasal bone through this small incision. A closed rhinoplasty involves incisions made inside the nostrils. While the scars from an open rhinoplasty are hard to notice, the location of the incisions in a closed rhinoplasty makes them impossible to see.
